History of Kagawa Eiyo Gakuen
(Kagawa Education Institute of Nutrition)
1933
Shozo and Aya Kagawa, then physicians at the University of Tokyo Hospital, initiate "Katei Shokuyo Kenkyukai", a research group for extensive research on diet for the prevention of the disease beri beri.
1935
Publication of the monthly nutritional journal "Eiyo to Ryori" (Nutrition and Cooking) begins.
1948
"Kagawa Eiyo Gakuen" (Kagawa Education Foundation) is founded.
1950
The Kagawa Education Foundation establishes "Joshi Eiyo Tanki Daigaku" (Kagawa Nutrition Junior College).
1956
Kagawa Nutrition Junior College opens the Evening Department of Health and Nutrition for working women.
1959
The Kagawa Education Foundation establishes the Kagawa Chef/Cook Training College, the first Chef/Cook training college in Tokyo.
1961
The four-year university "Joshi Eiyo Daigaku" (Kagawa Nutrition University) is founded, made up of a School of Home Economics comprised of a Department of Food and Nutrition. The Chef/Cook Training College and the Women's Nutrition School are integrated into Kagawa Nutrition University and reorganized as the Chef/Cook Training Program and the Dietitian Training Program, respectively.
1964
Kagawa Nutrition University opens a correspondence course.
1965
The School of Home Economics, Kagawa Nutrition University, is reorganized and renamed the School of Nutrition Sciences, the first of its kind in a private university in Japan.
1967
An Evening Department is created at Kagawa Nutrition University.
1969
The Graduate School of Nutrition Sciences, offering a Master's degree program, is opened.
1974
The Department of Food and Nutrition is renamed the Department of Nutrition Sciences, consisting of the Division of Nutrition Sciences and the Division of Applied Nutrition.
1980
The Department of Health and Nutrition is founded in the Undergraduate School of Nutrition Sciences.
1989
A doctoral program is created in the Graduate School of Nutrition Sciences.
1993
The Department of Culture and Nutrition opens, becoming the third department in the Under-
graduate School of Nutrition Sciences.
1995
A Master's in Health Sciences is established in the graduate school.
1997
A Doctorate in Health Sciences is established in the graduate school.
2000
Kagawa Nutrition Junior College is reorganized and renamed the Junior College of Kagawa Nutrition University.
2001
The Kagawa Nutrition Education Foundation is renamed the Kagawa Education Institute of Nutrition.
2003
The departments within the undergraduate school are reorganized and renamed the Department of Applied Nutrition, the Department of Health and Nutrition (comprising the Division of Nutrition Sciences and the Division of Health and School Nursing) and the Department of Culture and Nutrition.
2006
The Department of Culture and Nutrition is renamed the Department of Food Culture and Nutrition.
