Outline of Research Activities

The goal of our research is to clarify the mechanism of Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA), which is an asthmatic state (dyspnea) induced during vigorous or prolonged exercise or physical exertion. EIA usually occurs in the patient with chronic asthma. Thus the disease is mainly attributed to the bronchial destruction and its hyperresponsiveness induced by chronic asthma. In some patients, however, EIA develops without any asthmatic history. In those case, food allergy together with exercise might be the course. To approach those points, we investigate the excitation-contraction mechanism of thoracic smooth muscle cells in model animals by electrophysiological technique. In vivo study, we analyze bronchial responsiveness during physical exercise both in healthy and allergic objects, and estimate their risk developing EIA.
